3.27.11 Back from Beyond

Mr. Lady and I have been to Chincoteague Island on the Eastern Shore of VA. We have returned. We ate Chincoteague seafood and pizza (!), stayed in an island motel, looked at Assateague wild ponies from a distance

and one-legged birds up close,

a lighthouse

and the seashore.

It was cold and it snowed this morning!

We went so that I could take a workshop on mitering cables in knitting with Elsebeth Lavold who came all the way from Sweden where she lives and works. She was lovely, smart, and informal and the workshop, which was sponsored by Carodan Yarn Shop on Chincoteague island, was worth the 4 hour drive. All of these things can be googled.

I am going to go and watch NCAA basketball. We missed VCU winning their game to go to the Final Four. Darn. Caroline attends VCU. This is unheard of. VCU vs Butler?? Where are these places? I know where VCU is, in the heart of Richmond, VA. There is a lot of traffic and jubilation there right now.

7.3.10 Too Hot for Hose

And maybe HO’s. And certainly ho’s in hose. (Finally Maureen, finally) It has been so hot here that 80 is the new 60. Everyone knows this but still I mention it.

Don’t panic, I know you want the pictures because that is my favorite thing on most blogs. Here they are:
Spinning: 50/50 roving from Kid Hollow Farm spun as a singles, no idea the yardage but the fiber weighs about 1.5 lbs

I boiled those bobbins and the skeined the yarn wet.

Weaving: I warped the Harrisville loom last week with some cottolin in a Finnish Twill. Trying out some singles linen weft but I think I might just weave it off as hand towels.

Knitting: Knitting is progressing slowly on the Malabrigo Lady (ravelry link) in the color Bergamota. It is a sweater knit from the top down. If you are a knitter and have not done a top down sweater, I suggest that you cast on for one immediately.

On the travel scene, I went to Nags Head, NC for a couple of days and then home for a few days, packed up again and drove to Tuscaloosa Alabama. Thank the powers that be that my eldest daughter Anne got an offer from the University of Alabama for a place as a research assistant in grad engineering. Cuz that trip was hard. That is all I am going to say about it because venting is no longer theraputic. Or so they say. Here is one picture:

And the baby hawks have hatched and are learning to scream and hunt. One got his talons stuck in a pine cone in my front yard the other morning. Very amusing but I only got one very blurry picture of the adventure.

Thanks for checking on me! I am going for some iced tea. Because one of my photos of Hollywood Cemetery was short listed for a Schmap. This one:

5.19.10 Way too long away.

Yep. You know you have been away too long when your stats drop to zero. And I have been away too long. I keep reading that on blogs, that the bloggers are sorry they have been away, apologizing for not posting. Is blogging blogged out? Mine might be.

M and I did journey to Asheville NC to the UNC-Asheville commencement ceremony last weekend. What a beautiful day: 6000 chairs in rows in the sun of the quad. By the end of the 500 names people had retreated into the shade to stand and watch and be cool and drink the water that was provided. The emergency crew rescued a poor old guy from the heat. I have no idea how the graduates and faculty survived in their robes. It was a beautiful day nonetheless and Nick, Lindsey and Rachel (Hi Rachel!) all made it through with their degrees. They are siblings. They are my twin nieces and nephew, my brother LawyerK’s children, who all graduated on the same day! See this article in the Asheville paper. It is the first time in UNC history that 3 sibs have made it out on the same day. Oh, and we got to see Roy Williams, basketball coaching legend, but not Dean Smith that other basketball coaching legend. Good thing for the Dean because we are dyed in the wool UVA Wahoos and we remember his 4 point stall technique at the end of basketball games in the old U-hall in Charlottesville. We called BS on him numerous times.

I am not sure what it is going to be but I did weave something in the past week. Plain weave, weft faced, cotton, rayon, linen, silk warp. I bundled some finer cottons for the weft. Perhaps cushion covers? Yay!?

I did finish Citron on the trip. Yay!

That’s all.
