9.25.09 Harrisville Loom Revival

I started this blog over a year ago and the posts have been thinning out ever since. I just can’t get it together. I thought that blogging would keep me motivated and indeed it might if I ever blogged. All of this lack of craftiness started back at the beginning of the summer when the loom went upstairs. Even though it is in a beautiful window it is out of sight.

Well now, I have a project on the loom. This loom is downstairs. This loom is the recently renovated Harrisville 4 harness loom of the ’70s. I ordered an assembly manual from Harrisville but it did not match the loom entirely. We figured it out and now it is in action. Maybe I won’t get thrown out of the WeavingRing now!

I am using 8/4 cotton carpet warp in a twill stripe.

I must thank my DH for the renovation. Considering that this loom was passed around since the mid-70s then shoved into a closet with numerous other looms it was amazingly complete. It did need some new nuts and bolts and DH cleaned and pampered it with some Howard’s Feed and Wax. He repaired the brake and replaced the rotted leather cords with some purple stuff.

I will try to keep you posted.

Purple cords! I absolutely love it!

You should try what I’ve been doing–blogging every day for a month. No, what I post often isn’t craft related–sometimes I have to stretch to find a good topic. And it doesn’t have to be photo filled. (My post today was just the general “I wanted to sleep in today and didn’t get to” kind. So no photo.) Just a thought–my month’s been fun!

  3. It sounds like having your loom downstairs helps to motivate you….most people in my local weaving group feel that same way. So hopefully that will help you weave as much as you want to.

For me, I’m happier when I blog….but I’m on a bit of a blogging break myself at the moment. I look forward to both of us getting back into productive weaving and blogging modes!!

Beautiful warp and the loom looks great! Will they be towels? Love the purple cords. I too have found that I attend my fiber pastimes more when they are within sight. My spinning wheel has gotten more use in the last 3 weeks than it did all year just by bringing it downstairs.
    Happy weaving!

Thanks for all the comments on my post! This warp will indeed be towels, hopefully they will be absorbent and not just eye candy. I do need to move my loom back downstairs. I brought down my wheels and finished up some rambouillet roving that had been hibernating!

  5. My Harrisville needs some work. I would love to replace the cords and wonder if you could tell me what the purple cords are and where you got them.
    Thanks,

Barbara,My husband refurbished the cords with some clothsline cord from Lowes, 50 feet for about $2.25. It comes in different colors and is basically a strong cord encased in a mesh of colored stuff. You can burn the ends to keep it from unravelling. It may not be a permanent solution but it is working just fine without much cost although does not have the look of leather (which I wanted). I will take some pictures of the connections for you later! A
